Hello darlings!
Gong hay fat choy and happy year of the snake! I thought I’d use this holiday as an excuse to crochet something I’ve been wanting to make for a while. I made petunia from the film version of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’, which the Baudelaire’s used to warn Uncle Monty about Count Olaf.

And here’s how I did it!
You will need:
Orange wool (DK)
White wool (DK)
Toy eyes
Wire
Stuffing
6/0/(3.5mm) Crochet hook
I used this tutorial for the head and tail increases and decreases, respectively.

(Using the stitch markers my boyfriend’s mum gifted to me!)
I made the head following the tutorial and added the eyes and stuffed it before I went too far along.

You can follow the diagram below to make your own Petunia. My arm is tiny so you might want to double check if you have to make the orange segments longer so the letters will work.

Adding Wire
I realised very quickly that I couldn’t push the wire through stuffing so I had to figure out another way. Initially I just wasn’t going to stuff it, but she was looking like a sad flat noodle, so I had to find some way of stuffing it.
In the end, I inserted the wire into the snake after I had done about a third of it. I took a knitting needle (you can use anything long and pointy if you don’t have a knitting needle!) and pushed small balls of stuffing into the snake. I then continued crocheting (this was difficult with the wire inserted- I folded up the wire and the finished snake so they didn’t wobble around), stuffing it as I went.

I embroidered the letters on afterwards, pulling the thread through the back and leaving a ‘tail’ inside the snake, then using two small stitches to secure it.
I made the tongue using a tutorial from TikTok user ‘theknotmart’. Basically I made three single crochets, then another three and went back inside the previous two using a slip knot. I then repeated this on the other side to make the fork in the tongue, then went down the remainder of the tongue using slip knots. I sewed this into the mouth afterwards.

And that’s how I did it! Let me know if you make your own Petunia, I want to see pictures!
Until next time,
Aisha x
